๐Ÿ The Biggest Electricity Users in a Home

โœ“ Tested & verified Updated:

Ask someone which appliance uses the most electricity and they will usually name something with a screen. The real ranking is almost entirely about heat and hours.

The ranking, by annual kilowatt-hours

For an all-electric household of three or four. Homes with gas heating and hot water simply delete the top rows.

Two patterns explain the whole table

Heat dominates. Everything in the top five either makes heat or moves it. Turning electricity into warmth needs orders of magnitude more energy than turning it into light, sound or computation. That is why one heater outranks every screen in the house combined.

Hours amplify small numbers. The fridge draws 150 W and appears at number seven purely because it never stops. Standby draws 45 W and appears at number eight for the same reason. A 2,400 W oven used twice a week appears below both of them.

What this means for where to look first

If you have electric heating or hot water, nothing else on the list is worth touching until those two are addressed โ€” insulation, thermostat settings, a heat pump. The saving available there is larger than the total consumption of everything from row six downwards.

If you have gas heating, the top of your list is air conditioning in summer, an EV if you have one, then the dryer, the fridge and standby. In that case a heat pump dryer and a look at the standby load are the two changes with real returns.

And if the bill has jumped without an obvious cause, the checks in order are: a second fridge or freezer somewhere, an immersion heater left on constant, a hot tub, and a heater somebody left running in a room nobody uses.

Work through the ones that apply with the electricity cost calculator โ€” it takes about a minute per appliance, and the list above tells you which minutes are worth spending.
