How this works

List everything that stays awake โ€” set-top box, console in rest mode, soundbar, receiver, second television, anything with a clock. Each row runs for the full year, because that is what standby does. The total is usually somewhere between a hundred and five hundred kilowatt-hours, and three or four devices account for most of it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure standby draw?

A plug-in energy monitor, though many cannot resolve loads under about three watts โ€” which is fine, because anything they cannot see is not worth chasing. For a whole-house figure, read the meter late at night with everything obviously off.

Which devices are actually worth unplugging?

Set-top boxes and DVRs at fifteen to thirty watts, consoles in rest mode at ten to fifteen, old AV receivers at ten to twenty. Modern televisions and phone chargers are under a watt and not worth the inconvenience.

Is standby regulated?

Yes, and it is why the problem has shrunk. Most standby modes are capped at half a watt, with a few watts allowed for networked standby. What remains high is equipment that is not really in standby โ€” a box recording, a console downloading, a router routing.

How we calculate this

Each row is watts ร— 24 ร— 365 รท 1,000 ร— price per kWh. One watt of continuous load is 8.76 kWh a year, which is the figure the table is built on. Devices that are performing work rather than waiting โ€” a router, a recording DVR โ€” are not standby loads, though they can be entered here if you want the full always-on picture.
