A 3,000 W heater running three hours a day costs about $1.53 a day at $0.17 per kWh — $47 a month, £69 at £0.25, or €96 at €0.35. In winter, with the heater running eight hours a day, that becomes $124 a month.
A hot tub is not really an appliance you switch on. It holds 1,500 litres at 38 °C all the time, whether anybody uses it or not, and almost the entire bill is replacing heat leaking out of the water. Actual use adds surprisingly little; standing losses are the cost.
Which is why the cover is the single most important component. A cracked, waterlogged or poorly fitting cover can double the standing loss, and a replacement costs a fraction of a winter’s heating. After that: an insulated base, a wind break on the exposed side, and a thermostat setting one degree lower than habit.
Filtration matters too. The circulation pump is only 150–300 W but runs for hours; cutting an unnecessary filtration cycle is free money.

How much does a hot tub cost per month?
Typically $40 to $90 in summer and $90 to $180 in winter at US prices, £60 to £250 in the UK and €80 to €350 in Germany, depending on the tub, the cover and the weather. The spread within one country is bigger than the difference between countries, and it comes down to insulation.
Is it cheaper to leave a hot tub on or turn it off?
Leave it on if you use it weekly or more. Reheating 1,500 litres from cold takes 15 to 25 kWh and many hours; maintaining temperature costs less than that over a week. If it will sit unused for several weeks, drop the temperature or shut it down — but never leave water sitting cold and untreated.
Does the cover really make that much difference?
It is the largest single variable. Most heat leaves through the water’s surface, and a good cover is the only thing between 38 °C water and the air. A waterlogged cover — they absorb moisture and get heavy — insulates far worse than a new one and can double the standing loss all by itself.
How much does lowering the temperature save?
Heat loss is roughly proportional to the difference between the water and the air, so each degree lower is a few percent off the bill and more in cold weather. Dropping from 40 °C to 38 °C is typically 5 to 10% and most people cannot tell the difference once they are in.
What about the pumps and the blower?
The circulation pump is 150 to 300 W and runs for hours a day; the jet pumps are 1,500 to 2,500 W but only while somebody is using the tub; the air blower is 700 to 1,500 W and is the most expensive luxury on the panel, because it pushes cold air into hot water. Use the blower sparingly if the bill matters.
Does it cost more in a cold climate?
Substantially. Standing loss scales with the temperature difference between water and air, so a tub at 38 °C in 0 °C air loses roughly twice as much as it does in 20 °C air. Wind matters as much as temperature — an exposed tub on a windy site loses far more than a sheltered one.
