How much does an electric oven cost to run?

About 2 kWh an hour, which is $0.34 at $0.17 per kWh — £0.50 at £0.25, €0.70 at €0.35. Five hours of oven cooking a week is $88 a year, £130, or €182.

The plate says 2,400 to 3,000 W, but the oven does not draw that continuously. It heats hard for ten to fifteen minutes to reach temperature and then cycles the element to hold it, so an hour of cooking averages out at roughly two thirds of the rated draw. A fan oven cycles less and cooks at a lower temperature for the same result, which is worth around 10–20%.

The saving worth having is not in how you run the oven but in whether you use it at all. An air fryer at 1,500 W for twenty minutes uses 0.5 kWh; a microwave at 1,100 W for ten minutes uses 0.18. For one or two portions, heating a large insulated box to 200 °C to cook something the size of a plate is where the money goes.

How much does it cost to run an oven for an hour?

About $0.34, £0.50 or €0.70 at typical prices, working on 2 kWh an hour. A large oven at a high temperature can reach 2.5 kWh an hour, a fan oven at 180 °C rather less. The number that varies is not the element but how much of the hour it spends switched on.

Is an air fryer cheaper than an oven?

For small quantities, substantially. An air fryer is a small, well-insulated fan oven: it preheats in two or three minutes rather than fifteen and heats a much smaller volume. Twenty minutes at 1,500 W is 0.5 kWh against roughly 1.3 kWh for the same food in a full-size oven that had to warm up first.

Does preheating waste much?

Ten to fifteen minutes at close to full power, so around 0.5 kWh — a quarter of an hour’s cooking. For baking it is necessary. For a tray of roasting vegetables it usually is not, and putting them in from cold costs a few extra minutes rather than a preheat.

Is the hob cheaper than the oven?

For anything that can be cooked in a pan, yes. An induction hob puts its energy into the pan rather than the air around it and is 80–90% efficient against roughly 12% for an oven heating a single dish. A radiant electric hob sits in between. Boiling a kettle for pasta water rather than heating it in the pan saves again.

Does opening the door cost anything?

Not as much as the folklore suggests, but not nothing: a door opened for ten seconds loses a chunk of the hot air and the element runs longer to recover. The bigger loss is the oven light and door glass on old ovens, and a door seal that no longer seals — that one runs the element continuously.

Should I batch cook?

It is the single most effective oven saving. The energy is mostly spent heating the cavity, not the food, so a full oven costs almost exactly the same as an empty one. Cooking three meals at once and reheating two of them in a microwave is close to a third of the electricity.

The oven is treated as an energy-per-hour appliance rather than a constant wattage, because the element cycles once the cavity reaches temperature: a 2,400–3,000 W oven averages roughly 2 kWh per hour of cooking including a preheat. Cost is that figure × hours a week × 52 for the year. Comparisons with an air fryer and a microwave use their rated draw × actual run time, which is accurate because those appliances run at close to full power for most of a short cycle. Fan ovens are typically 10–20% lower than conventional ones for the same dish; that difference is inside the range given rather than modelled separately.
