How much does a pool pump cost to run?

A 1,100 W single-speed pump running eight hours a day costs about $1.50 a day at $0.17 per kWh — $46 a month, and roughly $270 across a six-month season. In Germany at €0.35 the same pump is €3.08 a day and €560 a season.

Then the physics that makes this page worth reading. Pump power rises with the cube of flow rate. Run a variable-speed pump at half speed and it moves half the water while drawing about an eighth of the power — so running it twice as long for the same total turnover uses roughly a quarter of the electricity. That is not a marketing claim; it is the affinity laws, and it is the largest single saving available anywhere in a normal house.

The second lever is hours. Most pools are over-filtered: the water needs one full turnover a day in domestic use, not the continuous running many timers are set to. Work out your pool’s volume, check the pump’s flow rate, and set the timer to what the water actually needs.

How many hours a day should a pool pump run?

Long enough for roughly one full turnover of the water in domestic use — commonly six to eight hours on a single-speed pump in summer, less out of season. Continuous running is rarely necessary and doubles or triples the bill. Chemistry and skimming matter more than raw hours.

Is a variable-speed pump really that much cheaper?

Yes, and it is the rare case where the marketing understates it. Power rises with the cube of flow, so half speed is about an eighth of the power. Running at half speed for twice as long gives the same turnover for roughly a quarter of the electricity — typically $200 to $400 a season on a mid-size pool, which pays for the pump in a season or two.

Does running it at night save money?

Only if you are on a time-of-use tariff, in which case it saves a lot. On a flat rate the pump costs the same at any hour. Many owners run during the day for skimming while the pool is in use, then a shorter overnight cycle on the cheap rate.

What size pump do I actually need?

Smaller than most installed pumps. Oversized pumps are extremely common, and they cost twice over — more power drawn, and higher friction losses in undersized pipework. If the pump is being replaced, sizing it to the plumbing and the turnover requirement rather than to the biggest available is where the saving starts.

Does a dirty filter cost money?

Yes. A clogged filter raises the pressure the pump works against, which on a single-speed pump means it moves less water for a similar draw — so it has to run longer. Backwashing or cleaning on schedule is the cheapest maintenance on the whole system.

What about the pool heater?

Different order of magnitude entirely. An electric pool heater is 5,000 to 15,000 W against 1,100 for the pump, and a heat pump pool heater draws less but still dwarfs the pump. If a pool is heated, the heater is the bill and the pump is the footnote.

The variable-speed comparison uses the affinity laws: flow varies with speed, and shaft power varies with the cube of speed, so half speed is approximately one eighth of the power. Doubling the run time at half speed therefore gives the same turnover for roughly a quarter of the energy, before accounting for motor efficiency at part load, which usually improves the figure further. Pool heating is a separate and much larger load and is not included here.
