Electric resistance heating is the one appliance where the arithmetic has no surprises: it is 100% efficient and there is nothing better to be. Every watt becomes heat, so a ceramic heater, an oil-filled radiator, a fan heater and an infrared panel at 1,500 W all put exactly the same energy into the room and cost exactly the same to run. What differs is how it feels — fast and dry from a fan, slow and steady from oil, radiant onto skin from infrared.

The catch is that 100% efficient is the ceiling here and the floor everywhere else. A heat pump moves heat instead of making it and delivers two and a half to three and a half units of warmth per unit of electricity. Same room, same comfort, a third of this bill — which is why a space heater is a sensible answer for one cold room for a few hours and a bad answer for a whole winter.

Which type of electric heater is cheapest to run?

None of them, and the question is the trap. At the same wattage, every electric resistance heater converts electricity to heat at exactly 100%, so a 1,500 W oil-filled radiator and a 1,500 W fan heater cost identically per hour. Marketing claims of an efficient heater are about how quickly the room feels warm, not about the energy used.

Is it cheaper to heat one room with a space heater than heat the house?

Often yes, if you genuinely stop heating the rest. One 1,500 W heater is far less than a central system warming five rooms. It stops being true when the space heater runs alongside the central heating rather than instead of it, or when the room is large — above about 150 sq ft a single plug-in heater cannot keep up in a cold room anyway.

Does a thermostat on the heater save money?

It saves hours, which is the same thing. Once the room is at temperature a thermostatic heater cycles rather than running flat out, so a heater that is on for six hours may only draw power for three. When entering hours here, use the time it is actually heating, not the time it is switched on.

How much does a heater cost to run overnight?

Why do European heaters go up to 3,000 W and North American ones stop at 1,500?

The supply voltage. A 15-amp circuit at 120 V carries 1,800 W on paper and 1,440 W as a continuous load; at 230 V the same current carries twice as much. It is the wiring, not the heater design — and it is why an American plug-in heater tops out where a European one is only half way up.

Is infrared heating cheaper?

Not per unit of energy — it is still 100% resistance heating. What it does differently is heat objects and people directly rather than the air, so you can feel warm sooner and sometimes at a lower air temperature. If that lets you run it fewer hours, the bill falls; the rate per hour does not.

Cost is watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your price per kWh, with a month taken as 30.44 days. Electric resistance heating is treated as exactly 100% efficient, which is physically correct: all electrical energy delivered to a resistive element ends up as heat in the room. The heat pump comparison uses a coefficient of performance of 2.5 to 3.5, the usual range for air-source units at moderate outdoor temperatures — that figure falls as it gets colder, and the heat pump page covers it. The 1,500 W ceiling for plug-in heaters on 120 V supplies follows the continuous-load limit of 80% of a 15-amp branch circuit.
