Per use, this is almost certainly the most expensive appliance in the house. One cycle uses more electricity than a fridge does in a day, more than a television does in a fortnight, and roughly as much as a 1,500 W space heater running for two hours.
The type matters more here than anywhere else on this site. A heat pump dryer uses about a third of what a vented one does — 1.1 kWh against 3.3 — because it recycles the heat instead of blowing it out of the wall. It takes longer per cycle and costs more to buy; at four loads a week it saves around $78 a year at US prices and €170 at German ones, which is a payback measured in a few years rather than a decade.
The free option still wins: a load dried outdoors or on an airer costs nothing at all.

Is a heat pump dryer worth the extra money?
At four loads a week it saves roughly 115 kWh a year against a vented machine — $20 in the US, £29 in the UK, €40 in Germany. If the price difference is $300, that is a long payback in America and a reasonable one in Europe. Households doing eight or ten loads a week reach it much faster.
Why is a dryer more expensive than a washing machine?
Because evaporating water takes far more energy than heating it. A 30 °C wash uses about 0.7 kWh; drying the same load takes 2.5 to 3.3 kWh in a conventional dryer. The washing machine’s spin is what reduces that — a faster spin leaves less water in the clothes and shortens the drying cycle noticeably.
Does a higher spin speed on the washer save dryer money?
Yes, and it is the cheapest change available. Going from 1,000 to 1,400 rpm removes noticeably more water in the wash, and every gram of water that leaves in the spin is water the dryer does not have to evaporate. The extra electricity for the faster spin is a fraction of what it saves at the dryer.
Is it cheaper to dry a big load or two small ones?
One properly filled load, but do not overfill. A drum packed too tightly tumbles badly, the clothes take longer, and the cycle extends until the sensor is satisfied. Two thirds to three quarters full is the sweet spot on most machines.
How do I find kWh per cycle for my machine?
The energy label gives annual consumption for a defined number of cycles, or consumption per cycle directly. Divide the annual figure by the number of cycles it assumes — usually 160 in EU labelling. If the label is gone, a plug-in energy monitor across one cycle gives the exact answer for your machine and your programme.
