A 6 m² bathroom at 150 W per m² draws 900 W, so six hours a day costs $0.92 at $0.17 per kWh — £1.35 at £0.25, €1.89 at €0.35. Over a six-month heating season that is about $167.

Scale is everything here, and it is why the reputation is so mixed. Under a small bathroom floor, electric underfloor heating is a pleasant $15 a week in winter. Under a whole 40 m² open plan ground floor it is 6 kW — the same as an electric shower running for hours — and it becomes one of the most expensive ways to heat a house that exists.

The thermostat does more than the mat. These systems are almost always run by a programmable floor thermostat, and the cost is proportional to hours. Two warm hours in the morning and two in the evening cost half of what six hours costs, and the floor keeps a useful amount of heat for a while after it switches off — tile and screed hold it, which is exactly why the system works at all.

In a bathroom, no — around $0.15 an hour for a typical 6 m² mat. Across a whole floor, yes: 40 m² at 150 W per m² is 6 kW, which costs about $1 an hour and can run to $1,500 over a winter. Electric underfloor is designed as a comfort layer for small rooms, not as the main heat source for a house.

How many watts per m² does underfloor heating use?

Mats come at 100, 150 and 200 W per m². 150 is the standard choice for a tiled bathroom or kitchen, 100 for a room that only needs a warm floor rather than heating, and 200 for a conservatory, a poorly insulated floor or somewhere with a lot of glass. The number is the peak draw, not the average.

Does it really draw full power the whole time?

No — the thermostat cycles it. Once the floor is up to temperature the system runs perhaps 30 to 50% of the time to hold it, so the average over a heating period is well under the peak. The calculator uses hours at full power, which makes it a safe upper estimate; the first hour from cold is the one that really does draw everything.

Is water underfloor heating cheaper than electric?

To run, usually yes, because it is fed by a boiler or heat pump rather than resistance elements, and gas and heat-pump heat are both cheaper per kWh than direct electricity. To install, it is far more expensive and generally only makes sense during a build or a full renovation. Electric mats exist because they can go under a new tiled floor in a weekend.

Should I leave underfloor heating on all the time?

For a small room, no — a programmable thermostat with two warm periods a day costs about half of continuous running. For a large slab with high thermal mass, a steady low setting can beat repeated reheating, because the slab takes hours to respond. The rule of thumb is that tile mats want scheduling and thick concrete slabs want stability.

Does floor insulation make a difference?

A large one. Insulation boards under the mat stop heat going down into the slab, which typically cuts warm-up time by half and running cost by a fifth to a third. It is the cheapest part of the installation and the one most often skipped, and it is not something that can be added later without lifting the floor.

How we calculate this

Cost is heated area × watts per m² × hours ÷ 1,000 × price per kWh, with the month taken as 30.44 days so twelve months and one year agree. The 100, 150 and 200 W per m² figures are the standard outputs electric underfloor mats and cables are sold at. Heated area is the area the mat actually covers, which is always less than the room — mats are not laid under baths, fitted units or in the perimeter zone, so a 8 m² bathroom typically takes a 5 to 6 m² mat. The calculation uses hours at full rated power, which is an upper bound: once the floor is at temperature the thermostat cycles the element, so real average draw over a heating period is typically 30 to 50% of peak. The insulation figures are typical manufacturer claims for insulation boards under the mat and vary with what is below the floor.
